Changed Shampoos a Hundred Times and Your Scalp Still Feels Off? A 22-Year Shampoo Guy Tells You Why

Ever been there? You’ve switched from one shampoo to another, and after every wash, something just doesn’t feel right. Sometimes your scalp is so dry and tight it almost itches. Other times, it feels so greasy and coated, like you never rinsed properly. Here’s the thing—it’s not the brand. It’s your scalp’s pH balance, the one thing you’ve probably never thought about.

I’ve been the “shampoo guy” in salons for 22 years. I’ve said this to countless clients: never underestimate your scalp’s pH. It’s the secret to hair that’s healthy, full, and comfortable all day long.

What’s a Healthy Scalp pH?

A healthy scalp is slightly acidic, with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. This fine, protective acid layer is called the acid mantle. Its job is crucial: it keeps bacteria out, locks moisture in, and makes sure your hair cuticles lie flat and smooth—so your hair looks sleek and shiny.

When this pH gets thrown off, the trouble starts.

The Two Big Mistakes When Choosing a Shampoo

1. Too Dry and Tight After Washing – It’s Too Alkaline

Some shampoos leave your scalp feeling so clean it squeaks—maybe even a little itchy. Those are usually too alkaline (high pH). They’re great at stripping oil, but in the process, they also strip away your scalp’s precious acid mantle. The result?

  • Your scalp feels dry, tight, and sometimes itchy.
  • The drier your scalp gets, the more your oil glands “panic” and pump out even more oil to protect it. That’s the vicious cycle of “the more you wash, the greasier it gets.”
  • Your hair turns rough, tangly, and loses its natural shine.

2. Greasy, Limp Hair After Washing – It’s Too Heavy

On the flip side, shampoos loaded with heavy moisturizers and silicones can leave a residue on your scalp. Sure, your hair feels smooth—but that’s fake smoothness. Over time:

  • Your follicles get clogged, and your scalp can’t breathe.
  • Your roots weaken, and hair starts falling out more easily.
  • Your hair looks flat, lifeless, and gets dirty again fast.

So, How Should Your Scalp Feel After a Wash?

After every wash, before you check your style, ask yourself these three questions:

  • Does my scalp feel fresh and like it can actually “breathe”? If yes, good sign. Your scalp isn’t too dry or too coated. It’s just right.
  • Does my hair feel naturally soft? Not that sticky, fake-smooth feeling—but light, bouncy softness.
  • Does my scalp still feel comfortable the next day? Not a greasy mess, and not flaking with dryness.

My rule is simple: Don’t trust the ads. Ask your own scalp. If the shampoo you’re using right now doesn’t give you these feelings, it’s time for a change—no matter how expensive or popular the brand is.
