Boss, honestly, I hear this every week. Right after you dye your hair, you look in the mirror quite happy, friends all say nice. Then 2-3 weeks later, your hair starts “running” — blonde turns yellow, brown turns orange, the whole thing looks like rust. You look damn lousy, no confidence to step out. Boss, listen to me — you didn’t do anything wrong. The problem is the dye plus your hair’s natural base colour.
Why Does Dyed Hair Turn Yellow/Orange? First Understand Your Base Colour
One sentence: dyeing or bleaching strips your hair’s original pigment, then stuffs a new colour in. Over time the new colour fades, and the underlying base colour (undertone) floats back up. And that base is different for everyone:
- Asians: hair base is warm, carries yellow. So when it fades, yellow pops out straight away
- Caucasians: after bleaching, mostly a white base, fades towards white/grey
- Indians: after bleaching, a reddish-brown base, fades towards red/orange
That “fire” you see in the mirror (we call it brass) is just your own warm base coming out.
Who Should Use Joico Color Balance? Cool Base Colour!
Important point, boss, remember this: Joico Color Balance is for COOL base colours. Meaning if your dyed colour is grey, cool brown, grey-purple, blue-black, ash — these cool tones — then it helps you.
On the other hand, if you dyed warm tones — golden brown, copper, warm red — please DON’T use blue shampoo, it’ll turn grey-ish, your whole head becomes a “grey mouse”.
Don’t Be Silly Thinking It’s a Hair Dye
This is the most common mistake: Joico Color Balance is NOT a dye, it’s a colour-care shampoo. Its job is colour correction — it helps you keep that cool tone fresh from the salon, so the colour lasts and looks like you just stepped out of the salon every single time. It won’t re-dye your hair, it just “holds” the cool tone you already have.
Purple-Red Colour? Even More Suitable
Here’s an insider secret: violet/plum colours especially suit Joico Blue. Because violet = blue + red. Every wash, the blue fades first and the plum slowly becomes “dead red”. Using Joico Blue tops up the blue every wash, so the plum naturally lasts and won’t fade into orange-red. Customers who dye plum, definitely pair it with this.
Salon Boss, This Is Your After-Sales Ace
I’ve been in this line 22 years, and my favourite thing to tell salon bosses: after a customer dyes their hair at your shop, recommend this — that’s your after-sales opportunity. Joico is an American brand, Henkel Malaysia official. You sell it with profit and face, the customer comes back saying “colour lasts long”, and you get repeat business. One 300ml lasts 2-3 months, so the customer auto comes back to restock.
How to Use + Notes
- 2-3 times a week is enough, no need daily
- Replace your usual shampoo, lather up and leave for 3-5 minutes before rinsing
- Use conditioner after — blue shampoo is slightly drying
- Don’t leave it too long, or your hair turns blue/grey
